Don’t Tell Mama // Doncaster

Recently I came by Don’t Tell Mama again and thought I’d do a blog post! The main thing I like about Don’t Tell Mama is that it’s one the larger sized Korean restaurants in the suburbs. I’d usually book just in case but because it can cater a lot of people it’s not usually fully booked. I’ve tried a number of things from the menu and I’d recommend sticking to their ‘Stir-Fried Meal’ section because they’re pretty tasty and it comes with a bowl of rice. I’ve tried items from the menu from each section (except lunch) and I’ve just found the other things to be more disappointing.dtm-tt-1
Lovers -Sharing Dolsot Bibimbab For 2 // $26
You can choose your choice of meat from pork, prawn, beef, chicken, tofu etc. We chose the prawn and I was pretty disappointed by the bibimbab. It’s quite average and the taste is extremely plain. There’s not much flavour unless you DIY and eat it with other dishes. It’s okay as a ‘side’ but if you did order this as your own main I think you’d feel quite disappointed by the lack of flavour and seasoning. The plus side is that if you are someone who cares a lot about health then I’d recommend getting this dish. Most of the menu items at Don’t Tell Mama are pretty oily except for this one.dtm-tt-2

Mr Hendricks Cafe // Balwyn

I went and had my first visit to Mr Hendricks Cafe a little while ago and it was a great first time experience!  It’s not a cheap eat but this place has nice service and a nice atmosphere. I like the visual appearance of the cafe and despite how there is both an indoor + outdoor seating area the service is quite quick and efficient.

On the day we arrived a little earlier than 11:30 and because I had heard so much about their soft shell crab burger dish I really wanted to try it. The menu says it’s only available after 11:30 because it’s a lunch dish, but the waiter kindly told me the chef would make an exception and I was able to order it! (YAY)

Grand Taipei Bakery // Box Hill

I love how authentic Grand Taipei Bakery is! It is a small and humble shop but the food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. With competition around the corner such as Food Republik, they manage very well! Even though their menu is definitely limited, I would still prefer to come here for Taiwanese food because it has bigger portions and the flavours taste closer to the cuisine.tw (4) Beef Noodle Soup // $8
Their noodle soup has a really generous serving size (I shared this dish!) they filled the soup to the top of the bowl! I love the flavour of the soup and the pickled cabbage. Wow – they gave us SO much pickled cabbage – it can’t be good for you BUT it tastes so yummy!! The flavour of the soup is really strong in beef stock and is more salty than it is sweet,tw (3)Taiwanese Egg Roll
This is a ‘small eat’ which is similar to the simple street foods you can get in TW. I love this one it’s SO simple but really tasty and soft.

They also have soya milk (warm or hot) options at the bakery. You can even buy a bottle/jug of it to take home (sugar or no sugar options) to store in the fridge. I think it’s pretty funny how they serve the hot soya milk in a bowl like soup! And of course since it’s called a bakery, they also sell heaps of different types of breads at the front of the store + cake! tw (2)
I definitely recommend this place. It has a very friendly environment and the food is delicious. Unfortunately it’s quite small so it probably won’t fit large groups of people and if you don’t speak Chinese it may be a little difficult to get good service from them (they do have English on everything which is good).

G2 Korean BBQ // Melbourne

IMG_5860Today my bf & I went to G2 Korean BBQ. We had a bit of a fail experience finding the place so when we finally found it we were relieved to see it was quite post modern – very clean and overall looked quite nice in presentation. I like the chalk decor on the walls and their wine rack adds sophistication.

The service was OK. They weren’t particularly friendly, just quite passive and quiet towards us.

g2 (4)  I really enjoyed my Beef Bulgogi Bibimbab – there was a lot of rice which made it quite filling. They had garlic and chilli sauce on the side which you self add to the dish. The rice they used was black rice as well. I also had this spicy Korean stew with lots of wombok in it (I love wombok!) Most of the Korean soups I’ve tried have been extremely spicy which I think is normal, but this one was only a little spicy so if you’re after something traditional this may not be the place to go. g2 (1)

Overall based on my bibimbab experience, I’d like to go back and try some of the other items on their lunch menu such as their soba noodles and their sizzling hot plates. The price is quite good ranging from about $11-$15.

Despite pretty average customer service, I had some great quality time and we both enjoyed the food together ^^ They were also playing the soundtrack from the recent drama ‘The Heirs’ which has been stuck in my head!!

Hammer and Tong +N2 Extreme Gelato

I had the pleasure of celebrating my two close friends birthdays at ‘Hammer and Tong‘ and then ‘N2 Extreme Gelato‘! Both visits for the first time and on a gorgeous sunny day too :))

Here are  my thoughts on the FOOD!

First stop – Hammer and Tong!
As soon as we arrived, I could already tell how popular it was just by the queue! We waited for almost half an hour for a table and there was probably about 5 others waiting behind us! The staff were friendly and overall quite quirky actually!bdaylunch (1)Corn & zucchini fritters, avocado, manchego, spinach, chili tomato relish, poached/fried egg /$17 (Friend’s dishes)

bdaylunch (2)Soft shell crab burger /$16
This was my dish and it was so tasty. I love the texture of Brioche buns done well and this one was light and tender. It had good flavours and the crab wasn’t too crunchy either. Definitely seasoned well, but not the most succulent tasting soft shell crab.Of course, a tad messy to eat but it was so worth it!

Second stop- N2 Extreme Gelato!bdaylunch (4)It seems as though everyone has been RAVING on about N2 so we thought we’d give it a try. We were so happy  for the lovely weather as well. When we arrived here, it was ALSO packed but lucky for us it gave us time to decide what we wanted. Their menu board is really fun and awesome with small cartoon drawings and handwritten food titles on a chalkboard like wall. I really wanted to try the crème brulee one that everyone had been recommending but unfortunately it wasn’t on the menu ( not for ‘this season’) so I really hope they’ll bring it back sometime and I can come back and try it!   bdaylunch (5) Black Lava Salted Caramel Dulche de Luche, Lavender + Almond Fed White Chocolate Fudge &  Deconstructed Apple Strudel \$6 each
I can see why many people are so into this place, but I do find it slightly overrated. Sure it’s a very cool place to check out for the first time – being their unique way of serving and making the gelato for you, however I do think that ‘awe’ does and will phase off after awhile. Therefore what will be left would be flavour and quality of their gelato. I had the Salted Caramel one which would have been nicer if it had been in a smaller quantity as it does just become too sweet.  For the price and the one size only, it’s not something I’d regularly get, though for a special treat  or an occasion I would not mind. After all they do have exciting innovative ideas for flavours which I’d be interested in checking out.  I suppose in the end it’s more about the experience of going to N2 and being curious about how their flavours differ to other typical gelato places.

And to my dear friends (Bec + Miriam) I really hope you guys had a lot of fun (I sure did!) celebrating your birthdays!  I feel sososo blessed to have you girls in my life. You’re both so easy to talk to and always giving me great tips and encouragements in my life xx
